To support the need for more Real World Evidence (RWE) on the value of providing therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (TAiCBT) in the treatment of posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI/PTSD), we report here on the results of BEACON in a sample of 70 individuals assessed and offered trauma-focused treatment.

Abstract

Therapist-assisted internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (TAiCBT) has been demonstrated to be effective treatment for reducing symptoms of posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI) / posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sub-clinical PTSD. These interventions reduce common barriers to accessing evidence-based treatment, such as cost, stigma, geography, scheduling, fidelity to treatment and system capacity. However, more research is required to demonstrate their effectiveness in real world settings and with different populations.

Given the need for more Real World Evidence (RWE) to support the wide implementation of TAiCBT in the treatment of PTSD, we report here on the results of TAiCBT for PTSD in a sample of 70 individuals assessed and offered trauma-focused treatment.

We obtained excellent results with participants who completed the program and were discharged. On average they experienced a 40% reduction in PTSD symptoms and 77% reported clinically significant change according to the PCL-5. Seventy percent of participants who completed treatment did not meet the cut off score of 33 for “probable PTSD” on the PCL-5 at the end of treatment. The program had some benefit for some similar clients who did not complete the entire program. These results are consistent with other first-line treatments for PTSD.

These data further support the wide implementation of TAiCBT for PTSD in real world settings with different populations, including military and public safety personnel. Beacon is available as a direct-to-consumer service reimbursable by most extended health benefit providers and we are now confident in our ability to rigorously and accurately assess, triage and provide effective treatment for PTSI/PTSD across Canada.
